Grandma, do you Remember is a story for children who have a loved one experiencing Dementia, Alzheimer’s and other related memory loss. This book was written out of love for little people, from the perspective of a family trying to navigate this “new normal,” prepare for what’s next, and what’s to come. It is also meant to answer common questions that kids have, such as: why does Grandma keep forgetting regular, everyday things? Why do the adults keep saying big words like Alzheimer’s or Dementia, and what do those words mean? What is going to happen to Grandma? What can/should I do to help? We also address, in a delicate and age appropriate way, the question of “What happens when Grandma passes away?” Dementia comes with some strange and interesting behaviors. It can be very scary to watch a loved one behave like they never have before; they might say/do things that are shocking, or that don’t make any sense at all. Sometimes it is difficult for our loved one to recognize us, or to remember our name, sometimes they lash out in frustration. Situations like this are scary and stressful, especially when they are new, and when you’re caught off guard by them. It can be difficult to try to explain Dementia to a child, especially when you are processing this news yourself and are not sure that you understand what Dementia and Alzheimer’s mean yet; what does this mean for your loved one and family? Know that you are not alone, and you do not have to navigate these uncharted waters alone. There are so many resources available, many that are free! You just have to ask for them and advocate for your loved one. Start with your loved one’s doctors and nurses – they are the experts, and can provide you with contact information for a variety of sources to best suit your loved one’s needs, and to guide you on this journey. God Bless you and your family.
